Frequently asked questions
Getting started
What is RowMarker?
RowMarker is a knitting and crochet app that turns your pattern into a live, trackable chart. Photograph a paper pattern, or import a PDF or a pattern shared from a website. RowMarker finds the charts, reads the row numbers, and gives you a row marker that snaps from row to row.
It also keeps your patterns, counters, notes, yarns and needles in one place, with no ads and no sign-up required.
Which devices does it run on?
RowMarker works on iPhone and Android phones, and tablets work too.
Is RowMarker free?
Yes. Importing patterns, chart detection, the row marker, counters, notes and backups are all free, with no ads and no limits on patterns, counters or photos.
RowMarker Pro is a single one-time purchase that adds the advanced project tools: chart grouping, repeat sections, stitch-count pins, the digitized chart views, the pattern editor, the yarn and needle stash, and tracking.
Does it work offline?
Entirely. Chart detection runs on your device, so you can photograph and track patterns without internet connection.
You only need a connection to bring new patterns in from the internet, like Ravelry import or sharing a pattern from a website, so download the PDFs you will want onto your device before you head out. Everything already in the app works offline.
How do I get started?
Install the app and open it. That's it. A short welcome flow asks whether you knit or crochet, and an example project is waiting on the home screen so you can try the marker and the counter before importing your own projects.
Which languages is RowMarker available in?
English, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German and French. More languages coming later.
Charts and detection
How does chart detection work?
You photograph a pattern page, or import a PDF or an image, and RowMarker finds the charts on it, straightens them, reads the printed row numbers, and lays a snapping row marker over the chart. It handles several charts on one page and multi-page patterns.
Everything runs on your device. Your pattern is never uploaded anywhere.
How do I get the best detection results?
Three things help: keep the page flat and photograph it straight on, fit every chart fully into the photo (a chart cut off at the edge cannot be detected whole), and use even light without shadows. The app shows the same advice, with examples, before your first photo.
A chart wasn't found at all. What now?
Open More and choose Redetect in the project. Frame the page with the four corners and detection runs again on just that area. This is the tool for the rare photo detection cannot crack on its own.
The chart was found, but it starts on the wrong row or the rows look off.
Open More and choose Adjust chart. You can add or remove rows and columns at any edge with the plus and minus buttons, fix the row numbering, and delete anything detected by mistake. Changes are staged and undoable until you apply them.
My chart is sideways in the PDF.
Adjust chart can also rotate the page.
How do PDF patterns work in RowMarker?
PDF patterns are imported in full, so the written instructions stay readable next to the charts. Pages can be reordered, duplicated or removed, and each page keeps its own row marker.
Can I import from Ravelry?
Yes. Connect your Ravelry account, browse your own pattern library, and import purchased pattern PDFs straight into a project.
Pro and purchases
What does RowMarker Pro include?
RowMarker Pro includes tools for making your knitting or crocheting journey even easier: chart grouping (several charts sharing one marker and counter), repeat sections, stitch-count pins and the shaping calculators.
RowMarker Pro also comes with the pattern editor for making your own patterns along with the clean digitized chart and overlay views, and colorway versions.
For people who want to track their yarns, needles, hooks, and whole process from start to finish there are the yarn and needle stash, and tracking for more detailed info and statistics about your projects.
Do I need a subscription to use RowMarker?
No. RowMarker Pro is a one-time purchase: pay once, keep it forever, and it will never quietly convert into a subscription.
There is an optional subscription for syncing between devices. Syncing keeps a copy of your data on our server, and running that server costs money every month.
I got a new phone. How do I get Pro back?
Install RowMarker, sign into the same store account, and tap Restore purchases in Settings. To move your projects, export a backup on the old device and import it on the new one (see the Your data and privacy section below).
Can my family use one purchase?
On iOS, RowMarker Pro supports Family Sharing. On Android, Google Play's Family Library doesn't cover in-app purchases, so each Google account needs its own Pro.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are billed by Apple or Google, so refunds go through them: on iOS via Apple's Report a Problem page, on Android via the Play Store's order history.
I have a promo code.
Redeem it in the App Store or Play Store and Pro unlocks the same way a purchase does. On a new device, Restore purchases brings it back.
Projects and tracking
How does the row marker work?
Press and hold the row marker, then drag it up or down, and it snaps to the chart's rows. Drag its bottom edge to resize it.
Prefer a calmer look? A visual-fade marker style dims every row except the current one instead.
What counters are there?
Every chart page has a row counter you can drag to any corner or flick toward the edge to tuck away. Projects can have named counters pinned to the toolbar (tap to count, long-press to edit), and there is a standalone counters tab for anything else. All free, all unlimited.
I'm working several charts at once, or charts that follow each other.
Chart grouping (Pro) is made for this: group the charts and they share one marker and one counter, whether they are worked side by side or one after another.
Can I mark up my charts?
Yes: highlight rows, columns or cells, or draw freehand, add note pins that open into text, and place text right on the chart. There are rich-text notes per project too.
Does RowMarker track my time?
If you want it to: time on a project is recorded on your device, and the tracker (Pro) turns it into panels: what is in progress, what is finished, where the hours went.
Rather not see numbers? Relaxed mode hides timers, counts and statistics app-wide.
Your data and privacy
Where is my data?
On your device. Patterns, projects, notes and stats never leave your phone unless you export them yourself, or subscribe to sync, which keeps a copy on our server so your other devices can reach it. Even then the data is yours: we do not read it or use it for anything else.
Do you see my patterns?
No. Detection runs on your device and nothing is uploaded for it. With the sync subscription a copy sits on our server for your own devices, and we do not read it there either.
How do backups work?
In Settings, Backup exports everything (projects, photos, notes, stash) as a single file you can save or share wherever you like. Import it on any device to restore.
Changing phones is exactly that: export, transfer the file, import. Backups are free and always will be.
What if I delete the app?
Without the sync subscription your data goes with it, because there is no cloud copy to fall back on, so export a backup first if you might come back. With sync, your projects are waiting on the server the next time you sign in.
For designers
I'm a pattern designer. What happens to my patterns in RowMarker?
Your patterns stay on your device, in your private library. With the sync subscription a copy sits on our server so your own devices can reach it and nobody else can.
Troubleshooting
Detection missed or got something wrong.
First check the basics: a flat page, photographed straight on, whole charts in the frame. If a chart was not found at all, open More and choose Redetect. If it was found but looks slightly off, open More and choose Adjust chart.
If a pattern keeps failing, we would like to see it. Send a photo of the page if you can: we can usually get detection working for it and the fix then helps everyone else with a similar pattern.
Pro is missing after a reinstall.
Open Settings and tap Restore purchases, signed into the same store account you bought Pro with.
I found a bug or I have a feature idea.
Tell us! Email contact@puhvi.com with your device model, its iOS or Android version and what happened. Screenshots welcome.
Feature wishes are welcome too. RowMarker started as one knitter's own project and the aim is still the same: to make working from a pattern easier for everyone.
